Questions USA number validation process

I have a list of USA number I would like to validate them i.e to know if they are active or no longer in service (by calling them or by some other method), I know about some sites that tells you if the number is valid but its of no use.
I am looking for a preferably free solution on this.

Please help me on this, thanks.

PS: are there any free apps that lets you directly call USA numbers
